I was fortunate…

to have a mother who taught me how to sew.  I remember sitting at her “White” sewing machine in an alcove underneath the stairs. I started out making pillow covers and doll clothes. As I got older my mother encouraged me to make my own clothing; that way I wouldn’t accidentally wear the same outfit as someone else. I loved the idea that I had the ability to express myself through my unique, hand-made clothing.

Then something happened.

I grew up; really up – like tall. So, what started out as an opportunity for self-expression became more of a necessity. Store-bought clothes didn’t fit me right. If the waist fit, the pant leg was too short. If the sleeves were long enough, the neck was too big. If by some miracle, I found something that fit my tall stature, it didn’t reflect “my personal style.”

One day it occurred to me…

that other people must experience these same issues; due to either fit or fashion. They certainly deserved the same opportunity to feel confident, comfortable and stylish in their clothing. I realized that I had the ability to share my creativity and skills with others, so that’s what I did.

It warmed my heart…

every time I saw the reaction of friends and family when I made something for them. I saw how special it made them feel to get a one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted item that reflected their personal style. People expressed so much gratitude. They told me how creative I was and encouraged me to start sharing my creative skills with others.

After much contemplation…

I took a very scary, yet exciting leap – I left my career of 30+ years and created Avant Garb Fashions, a small, hand-made business with the sole mission of helping others fully express themselves through fashion. From custom clothing and accessories to historic garments, dramatic play clothes, and pet gear, Avant Garb Fashions has something for everyone who is looking for a unique way to “adorn themselves!”
